I used to be a French Immersion Junior High teacher. In 2007, I got suspended for blogging from a school computer. It may sound harmless, but it caused what amounted to a professional scandal. I was administratively transferred from a school where I had been working for five years and the career I had been building was shattered and destroyed.

It was the best thing that ever happened to me.

In the end what mattered most to me was my writing. The experience clarified my vision and removed all doubt: it’s what I should have been doing all along. The greater the fall, the bigger the lesson.

I left teaching shortly after to become a freelance writer. Six months later, I signed my first book deal. And three months after that, I signed my second. Now I am the published author of For the Love of Chocolate and For the Love of Coffee.

Writing is a lot of work, and it’s extremely rewarding. Like any other creative or artistic endeavour, it has the potential to take years off your life. One thing I know for sure: you will experience quicker results and more success the minute you start asking for help.
